Andy Palmer is Executive Vice President and Executive Committee member at Nissan Motor Company Limited, with specific responsibilities for Nissan's Corporate Planning, Product Planning and Programme Management, Global Marketing Communications, Market Intelligence, Global IS/IT and Global Infiniti Business Unit.
Mr. Palmer joined Nissan in 1991 as business administration manager at the Nissan Technical Centre Europe (NTCE) and ultimately became Deputy Managing Director of NTCE in 2001 after managing many technical functions within the company. In September 2002, he transferred to Japan as Program Director for Light Commercial Vehicles (LCVs).
In 2003, Palmer was appointed President of Nissan Motor Light Trucks Company Limited, while retaining his duties as Program Director. Nissan Motor Light Trucks, located in Omiya, Japan, is responsible for vehicle development of Nissan's global light duty trucks. He continues to hold this position today.
In April 2004, Palmer established the LCV business unit within Nissan and in April 2005, he was promoted to Corporate Vice President in charge of the unit. The LCV business was identified as one of four breakthroughs under Nissan's three-year Value-Up business plan. Under that plan, Nissan has achieved an increase in global LCV sales above 40% (achieving in excess of 500,000 units) and more than doubled its consolidated operating profit margin to above 8% by fiscal year 2007. 2010 will see a volume around 854,000 units as growth continues.
In February 2009, Palmer was appointed Senior Vice President and a Member of Nissan’s Executive Committee. In October 2010, his scope of responsibility was extended to include Global Marketing, Brand and Communications, with a mandate to improve the Nissan Brand Value through the mid-term. In April 2011, he was named Executive Vice President.
Prior to joining Nissan, Mr. Palmer worked at Rover Group and Automotive Products Limited.
Mr. Palmer currently serves as Representative Director of Nissan Light Trucks Company Limited, is a Member of the Board of Dong Feng Motor Company Limited and Nissan's LCV Joint Venture Companies with Ashok Leyland in India.
Mr. Palmer is a Chartered Engineer and a Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. He holds a Masters Degree (MSC) in Product Engineering (Warwick University, England), a Diploma in Industrial Management (Coventry University, England) and a Doctorate (PhD) in Management (Cranfield University, England). He is a Member of SAE and a Chartered Manager (Member of Chartered Management Institute).
He is also a Guest Professor at Tokyo University for Agriculture and Technology and in 2010, was conferred an Honorary doctorate of technology (HonDTech) from Coventry University.
Mr. Palmer, who was born in Stratford upon Avon in England, lives in Tokyo and is married with four children. Hobbies include reading and listening to “Punk” rock music and running by necessity.
