OVERVIEW: THE COUPÉ ACCORDING TO INFINITI
The Infiniti G Coupé is one of a trio of V6-powered models that make up the Infiniti G Line for Europe; the others are the G four-door and the G Cabrio with electric retractable hard-top. The G family forms a key part of the local launch of Infiniti, Europe’s newest luxury automotive brand.

Infiniti’s guiding principle is “Inspired Performance” and the G Coupé hits its mark in spectacular fashion. It is a true performance car that offers spacious two-plus-two accommodation in a beautiful coupé body with a strong street presence. The Coupé shares its mechanical base with the other G models but in the styling stakes is a long way from being just a two-door version of the sedan.

With its long bonnet, low-slung body and front engine/rear drive layout, the G Coupé follows coupé convention – but then elevates it to a higher level by way of trademark Infiniti design cues, chassis sophistication and peerless quality. This is backed up by a remarkably complete standard specification and industry-leading levels of customer service.

There is a single engine option: an award-winning 3.7-litre V6 offering 235 kW (320 PS) and a high-rpm engine note that will delight all keen drivers. Although Infiniti comes from Japan, significant engineering time has been spent tuning the G Coupé for European tastes – including coming up with a sportier exhaust note. The engine is mated as standard to a slick-shifting 6-speed manual gearbox but comes with the option of an advanced 7-speed automatic, complete with steering wheel-mounted shift paddles.

There are five versions – the features-laden G Coupé; the luxury-oriented GT with leather upholstery; and the S with 4-Wheel Active Steer and sports suspension, among other changes. All the G Coupés deliver the rewarding driving experience promised by their looks and power, but the S’s mechanical changes endow it with capabilities to satisfy the most demanding drivers.

Following a lead set by other Infiniti models and in response to customer demand for Infiniti cars that lack for nothing, Premium editions of both the GT and the S have been introduced for the 2010 Model Year. All Premium models come with Infiniti’s hard disk drive (HDD) information and entertainment platform, Connectiviti+, with its innovative satellite navigation system’s access to tourist information and points of interest (POI) from the Michelin Red and Green Guides. Also standard is a Bose® 11-speaker sound system, reversing camera and Infiniti’s innovative safety technology, Intelligent Cruise Control (ICC) combined with Intelligent Brake Assist (IBA).

The Premium versions offer exceptional value and are expected to be the top selling Coupés.

All G Coupés are well equipped as standard with Infiniti’s Adaptive Front-light System (AFS) where the bi-Xenon headlamps automatically follow the path of the front wheels to illuminate corners. If luxury car buyers expect that – if only as an option from some rival makes – they may not expect self-healing paintwork. Infiniti’s unique Scratch Shield paint uses a highly elastic resin within the conventional clearcoat to increase the paint’s flexibility. A car painted with Scratch Shield can exhibit up to five times fewer scratches than a car with a conventional clearcoat when exposed to the same conditions.

The G Coupé range is as follows:

Options
By the standards of rivals, the G Coupé’s options list is short with a bias to cutting-edge technology. A 7-speed Adaptive Shift Control (ASC) automatic transmission, complete with magnesium gearshift paddles behind the steering wheel, is available on all Coupés.

Other options are: Laser-governed Intelligent Cruise Control (full speed range) and Intelligent Brake Assist (GT and S only); 19-inch 10-spoke Sport alloy wheels (G and GT only);  hand-stained Maplewood interior trim (automatic versions only); Connectiviti+ 30 GB HDD navigation with 3D POI and Michelin Guides, high-resolution touch screen, 10 GB Music Box with 300 CD storage capacity, rear view camera, and 11-speaker Bose® sound system (GT and S only).

G COUPÉ IN DETAIL

Exterior design
A long bonnet, short overhangs and dramatically raked roofline give the G Coupé a silhouette which instantly sets it apart from rivals that resemble more closely the sedans on which they are based. The G Coupé revels in its own strong visual identity thanks to a stunning body that shares only the door handles with the four-door G.

The Coupé’s design is characterised by elegant and sophisticated proportions allied to an expressive, curving shoulder-line to give a feeling of dynamism – a feeling that is evident even when the car is parked up. The relatively short and low roofline accentuates the Coupé’s low centre of gravity and sends a clear message that this is a rear-wheel-drive car.

Curving character lines at the front mimic the lines of the front wings and help give the Coupé an athletic stance. The slats of the front grille are inspired by Japanese swords, while a special production process had to be developed for installation of the headlights – to ensure a precise fit into the complex surfaces.

At the rear the Coupé boasts muscular shoulders and a pronounced integral lip spoiler. Details like the double-circle LED lights and twin exhausts are similarly pure performance car inspired.

The S rides on 19-inch wheels, the G and GT are on 18-inch alloys.

Interior design
The G Coupé provides a sporting environment for the driver and a luxuriously open space for his or her passenger. The dashboard and newly revised centre console, complete with 7-inch colour display, adopts Infiniti design DNA with a “double wave” upper section linked to a central vertical spine for an unmistakable feeling of strength and solidity.

Interior enhancements for 2010 include the introduction of Shodo aluminium trim, a textured finish reminiscent of Japanese calligraphy and just one way in which the Coupé pays homage to traditional Japanese design and crafts. Other changes include a redesigned centre console based on that of the EX and FX crossovers. What doesn’t change is the Infiniti trademark timepiece on the dashboard: an elegant analogue clock.

Every driver should feel comfortable behind the wheel with ergonomic excellence guaranteed. To ensure a clear view of the dials, the binnacle is attached not to the dashboard but to the steering column itself, and moves with the wheel when it is adjusted for reach and rake. On all versions the steering column is electrically adjustable in both planes.

The front seats feature power adjustments in all models. The G driver’s seat has 8-way adjustment, the GT 10-way adjustment and the special hip-hugging sports seats in the S feature no fewer than 14 separate electric adjustments. The most comfortable and relaxed driving position for drivers of all shapes and sizes is just a button push away.

Thanks to its long wheelbase, there is room in the rear compartment for two adults with easy ingress and egress provided by wide-opening doors and electric fold and slide front seats. The practicality and loading capacity of the G Coupé are further improved by fold-down rear seats.

Engine and transmission
Whether entry model, luxury GT or sporting S, all G Coupés are powered by a 3.7-litre V6 petrol engine that blends superb refinement and ease of use with performance to shame many sports cars. From rest to 100 km/h takes just 5.8 seconds (manual transmission) while top speed is electronically reigned back to 250 km/h. Fuel economy on the combined cycle is 10.6 l/100km with CO2 emissions of 248 g/km. The engine is fully compliant with Euro 5 emission level requirements.

Infiniti’s 3.7-litre V6 is a potent, high-revving, 24-valve twin-cam unit whose 235 kW (320 PS) peaks at a soul-stirring 7000rpm. Torque is an impressive 360 Nm at 5200rpm.

Constructed from lightweight aluminium, the engine features a two-part bed-plate construction which is more rigid than a single-piece casting, reducing vibration. The motor racing-inspired construction method also permits sustained use at higher revs: the V6 is red-lined at 7500rpm.

The V6 combines its high performance side with the utmost efficiency thanks to VVEL (Variable Valve Event and Lift) technology. VVEL boosts power and response but also improves fuel economy and lowers emissions, compared to standard valve lift systems, by continually altering valve lift and therefore the quantity of air in the combustion chamber. Precise mapping of the ECU maximises the advantages of the VVEL system to ensure power and torque build progressively, avoiding any feeling of a “peaky” power delivery.

Impressively the G Coupé with optional automatic is virtually as fast as the manual – 0-100 km/h in 5.9 seconds – with similar fuel efficiency (10.5 l/100km on the combined cycle) and CO2 (246 g/km). The auto is Infiniti’s new Adaptive Shift Control (ASC) transmission with seven ratios including a special long-legged top for more relaxed, and economical, motorway driving. The ASC box loses nothing in sportiness, however, coming with a switchable manual mode which calls into play two large shift paddles, crafted from solid magnesium, located behind the steering wheel. They offer all the control of the 6-speed manual gearbox with the convenience of two-pedal motoring.

On the road
Every Infiniti is designed to offer a rewarding driving experience, but for the G Coupé it is central to the car’s appeal. The Coupé delivers what the design and engine promise thanks to a variety of bespoke sporting solutions – from beefed-up brake pedal feel to advanced 4-wheel steering – in league with a level of tuning for European roads that guarantees maximum safety and enjoyment even when pushed to the limit.

The G platform is the backbone on which the Coupé’s adroitness is built. The second-generation of Infiniti’s FM platform, the “front midship” layout sites the V6 engine as low down and as far back as possible in order to lower the centre of gravity and deliver optimum front-to-rear weight distribution. Most of the engine block is in fact behind the front axle line.

The fully independent suspension uses lightweight aluminium components to reduce weight as much as possible. A double wishbone set-up at the front and  subframe-mounted multilink suspension at the rear, allied to an extremely rigid body shell, give the G Coupé agile handling perfectly in tune with its performance potential.

That potential reaches its apogee in the S. This is no mere sporty version with go-faster badges and bigger wheels in the manner of some rivals’ efforts. This is instead a highly focused sporting car that benefits from significant mechanical changes for drivers who seek no compromise in agility and high-speed stability.

The principal enhancement is the addition of 4-Wheel Active Steer (4WAS), unique on a rear-wheel drive car. By varying the front steering ratio and adjusting the geometry of the rear suspension according to steering input and vehicle speed, the system enhances turn-in, maximises grip and boosts stability. In league with other changes – a Viscous Limited Slip Differential (VSLD), recalibrated sports suspension settings and an enhanced braking system with 4-piston front brakes – the S takes the Coupé’s already highly resolved handling to a new level of driver involvement.

All versions of the G Coupé come with Electronic Stability Program (ESP), while the 4-wheel vented disc brakes have a 4-channel, 4-sensor Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brake force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist (BA) as standard. To enhance the braking feel, the Coupé uses a “link-design” pedal which becomes progressively firmer as g-forces and vehicle speed increase – again, a change made especially for the Coupé in light of its greater driver focus.

The power steering system is a vehicle speed-sensing type that provides optimum steering effort at both high and low road speeds.

A high performance aural soundtrack, developed specially for the Coupé, backs the dynamic drive. Equal length tubular exhaust manifolds and a symmetrical exhaust and silencer system allowed the engineers to create a linear sound with a good balance between low and high frequency notes.

In short, the G Coupé sounds fantastic.

Options in detail
• ASC automatic transmission
Infiniti’s Adaptive Shift Control (ASC) gearbox is equipped with seven speeds which allows the intermediate gears to be optimally spaced for performance while retaining a long-legged seventh for improved fuel economy and refinement on the motorway. Smoothness and response are guaranteed by the ASC software “adapting” to one of three change programs dependent on how the car is being driven. In manual mode, the solid magnesium gearshift paddles behind the steering wheel offer the driver full control for an even more rewarding drive.  The gearbox additionally features a DS “drive sport” mode in which it holds onto the gears longer, revving to the red line, and also shifts down more promptly under braking.

• Intelligent Cruise Control (ICC)
Should the distance to the vehicle in front shorten significantly, the Intelligent Cruise Control (ICC) will let you know by way of visual and acoustic signals. If necessary, the Intelligent Brake Assist (IBA) autonomously slows down the Infiniti G until you’ve regained the optimum distance from the car in front. When coupled with automatic transmission, the Low-Speed Following feature (LSF) automatically adapts to slow-moving driving situations such as congested city traffic. By intelligently braking the vehicle, it maintains your distance to the vehicle in front.

• Bose® sound system
The custom-engineered sound system sets a new standard for stereo performance in a car. Its 11 high-performance speakers provide crisp musical detail with impactful low notes bringing G owners closer to the power and emotion of a live concert performance.

LIVING WITH THE G COUPÉ

Safety
High levels of passive safety were a priority at the design stage. As a result, the G Coupé has a full complement of six airbags, with dual-stage front airbags, seatbelt sensors and passenger seat occupancy sensor. The front seats incorporate hip and thorax bags, while there are front-to-rear curtain airbags for protection in a side impact.

Also standard is a pop-up bonnet, designed to offer greater protection for pedestrians. In the event of a collision, a small pyrotechnic charge raises the edge of the bonnet where it meets the base of the windscreen. This creates a larger “cushion” area between the bonnet and the top of the engine, providing a more yielding surface which helps to reduce potential injuries.

Quality
Infiniti is synonymous with vehicle quality, and that’s something that doesn’t happen by accident.

On the Tochigi production line in Japan every vehicle – not just every tenth – is laser scanned to ensure that panel gaps are within prescribed limits.

During the design and development phase, new models are exhaustively tested not just at Infiniti’s Hokkaido proving ground but also at the Tochigi and Motegi test and race complexes in Japan. Infiniti also has a vast 12.34 million square metre hot weather testing base in Arizona.

Testing every Infiniti in the harshest of conditions and over thousands of kilometres ensures the durability and peace of mind that buyers can expect from the products.

Total Ownership Experience
Infiniti does not just offer a new range of cars in Europe but also a new way of looking after their owners. The Total Ownership Experience – a system honed to perfection around the world since Infiniti’s inception 20 years ago – puts the customer first at every twist and turn of running a car. Even when the customer is not actually driving an Infiniti. It’s a bespoke approach to meeting individual owners’ needs which applies at every stage of choosing, buying and running an Infiniti.

To ensure life with an Infiniti Coupé flows totally smoothly, every Infiniti owner is assigned their own Customer Account Manager who becomes their single point of contact throughout their period of ownership. VIP-type levels of service care are further enhanced by a free car pickup and delivery service (subject to distance).

Each G Coupé also comes with a mobility package of roadside assistance and touring assistance. But it takes things a stage further by focusing on the owner rather than the car, so they are never left stranded, whatever the circumstance.

The showrooms, like the service, are not like those of other brands, either. Infiniti Centers epitomise “modern luxury”. They are built on a grand scale to be visually and technologically stunning but also welcoming and relaxing. Visitors can get to know the cars, feel and smell the leather thanks to giant swatches, explore colour and trim possibilities on plasma screens or simply enjoy a coffee while browsing the variety of Infiniti information packs.

Infiniti’s partners in these Centers are groups that have solid experience retailing luxury brands. That means customer-focused staff who are used to selling luxury goods to discerning clients. Infiniti Center staff are able to advise on a range of bespoke services from test drives to tailored finance and maintenance packages.

Europe-wide, 80 Infiniti Centers, located in some of Europe’s best addresses, are due to be open for business by the end of 2010.

An unmatched online experience at www.infiniti.com complements the Infiniti Centers.
